Institutional courage refers to an institution's dedication to pursuing truth and moral action, regardless of any discomfort in doing so. It emphasizes protecting those reliant on the institution and aims to promote the common good.

An organization acts with courage when it actively believes in, validates, and supports survivors of domestic violence. Such organizations act with transparency and accountability, educate their entities about abuse, and commit resources to helping survivors. The 11 Steps of Institutional Courage are listed below. This is important for all organizations because survivors have experienced harm and betrayal from many entities, including healthcare, law enforcement, therapists, social services, government agencies, churches, and more.

The opposite of Institutional Courage is Institutional Betrayal.
