Institutional betrayal involves wrongdoings by institutions towards those who rely on them, including failures to prevent harm and provide support.
When institutions deny or minimize abuse, respond with hurtful comments or harmful actions, or have no awareness or understanding of abuse, it constitutes betrayal and leads to further harm. It is important for all organizations to recognize the harms caused, and to take steps to minimize harm and maximize the help and support offered to survivors.
The opposite of institutional betrayal is institutional courage.
See how this applies to churches.
