Domestic violence and children

It is a myth that children are not affected by the domestic violence that happens to a parent. It's also not true that children are oblivious to abuse that happens in the home. Children hear more, see more, and experience more of the abuse than you might guess. Statistics also show that abusive partners are also abusive parents. Children are affected in so many ways, including their physical and mental health. Children who grow up in abusive homes are also more likely to be the abusers and victims of the next generation. If we want to end abuse and break the cycle of abuse from one generation to the next, we have to protect our children. We have to believe victims when they share about their experiences, we have to be willing to help those victims get to safety, and we have to support them while they recover from the effects of the abuse.
